LOTHAR DIDN’T say it, but he’d let me know I’d been the jerk. Probably true. I wasn’t warm and fuzzy. Because Lothar asked, I agreed to meet Eric again. And Eric agreed to come to Coronado instead of making me go back to San Diego.

As I waited for my new “friend” to arrive, I decided I needed to quit. I hated DOGA—the Department of Gifted Americans—but I also owed them. They found me, trained me, and paid me very well. Nothing, however, was free.

I spotted Eric in the parking lot and stood up so he’d see me. His glare didn’t bode well for our second chance.

“You know, you’re a real pain in the ass,” Eric said as he walked toward me. “Do you—”

I sped up enough to get behind him and hoisted him over my head. At the water’s edge, I flipped back to normal and set him down. “Be nice or next time I drop you in the middle of the ocean.”

“Wesley.” Lothar’s disappointment hurt more than Eric’s insults. I didn’t bother to point out I hadn’t even had a chance to apologize before Eric lit me up. “What did we talk about?”

“No one mentioned you had superstrength,” Eric said.

“There’s a lot about me you don’t know.” When they tested me, the agency had done something to my cells that made me stronger than normal. Came in handy, but I wasn’t Superman. “How about we try again? I hear third time’s a charm.”

“Sure.”

“Wesley Blake.” I held out my hand.

He smiled as he shook. “Eric Throson.”

“C’mon.” I nodded toward the small cluster of restaurants. “I reserved a table in a quiet spot.”

“Whoa, big deal much?”

“Nope, just a good tipper.” I wondered if he got the connection.
